Mekiachahkwewin- Community Garden Project

Our plants are now often misappropriated through government interference and commercial corporate farming. This includes direct attacks by Commercial Tobacco companies and their by-products often being used in ceremonies and given away to Elders as Gifts!

Our community garden program is one of but many attempts to reclaim the sacred practices in connection with Nature in leadership of our Elders.

Our Elder's Goals:

  1. Growing and sharing seeds of wild plants
  2. Exchanging, swapping natural tobacco and medicine plants
  3. Promote traditional plant and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)
  4. Refusing use of commercial products and competitive non-native plants and products
  5. Promoting food security and Food exchanges
  6. Empower Elders in leadership roles
  7. Empower youth
  8. Supporting local food networks
  9. Reducing poverty by producing local foods and Shareing with those in need

***Proceeds remaining after each growing season ensure that Elders have funds for Gatherings/harvesting seeds and plants and other sacred items for ceremonies.

2011 Our vision grew with the ability to support those in need local Aborginal Students and Homeless shelters

With funding from BC Horizons 2010-11, Mekiachahkwewin has finaly come to life, with a green house, gardening boxes for our elderly community, courses on food preservation, community food gatherings and cultural materials for community Elders who give so much to our communities well being.

Please Donate to our Garden program

Many of the sacred plants have been taken by modern western culture and abuse--some have been wiped out in favor of bio-medical development and corporate greed. Tobacco is one such plant, used for corporation and government interests, and in so doing is destroying our medicine teachings and practices. Help us reclaim this and many more plants by making a donation or request for our products as gift for an Elder or some on in your community. Your donation supports our community programs and helps more local growers and harvesters and those in need promote our culture and practices.
